The Millenium Bug At Stevie's Place!!

The Millennium Bug

UPDATE The Task force set up by the British government has warned that countries with Nuclear Capabilities, I.E they have Nuclear Bombs in their Arsenal, that their bombs should be dis armed. It is not known weather the onboard computers can cope with the date change [See Below].

The Millennium Bug.

This is not what it sounds, the Year 2000 Bug is one of the worlds biggest problems. What with everything in your home relying on a computer chip which contains a date your home may just stop functioning. Washing Machines, Dish Washers, Boilers, Televisions, Radios/Hi-fi's, Transport will be affected too. Scientists haven't worked out what will happen to Airplane flights currently in the air when the clock strikes 12 midnight on December 30 1999. will they just fall out of the sky? or will they just carry on as normal?

Its impossible to tell until it actually happens.

PC's Are at risk too. Some older models cannot stand the date change. This dates back to early programmers in the 1950's. They used shorthand dates, I.E 50 instead of 1950 or 60 instead of 1960 etc... this became a kind of industry standard dating system until somebody realized there was a date change coming up. Most newer PC's will be fully functional on January 1 2000 but there are some that will not recognize the date. some will take "00" to mean 1900 or 1980. Here I will show you how to work out if your PC will be operating smoothly on January 1 2000.

It would be a good idea to print this page or at least write the instructions down for reference

1. Turn your PC on and when it says 'Starting Windows' press F8 and from the menu select 'Command Prompt Only' and your PC Will be in MS-DOS Mode. At the Prompt Type DATE and press return.
2. Today's date will be shown and you will be prompted to type a new date.. Type 31'st December 1999. This will be commonly DD/MM/YY or in America MM/DD/YY. Meaning DAY/MONTH/YEAR
3. Now type time and and press return. Type in 23:59:30 to show 30 seconds before midnight and press return. Switch off your PC and wait 30 seconds for the clock to tick by into the year 2000
4. Restart your PC in Dos again and type DATE. If the date is 1/1/2000 your PC has passed the test and will be fully operational come the big day. type in today's date and type time again and type in the right time.
5. If the date says anything other than 1/1/2000 (Possibly 4/1/1980) your PC will need help. Most likely you'll just have to type in the correct date in 2000. To test this change the incorrect date to 1/1/2000 then switch off your PC
6. Restart your PC, again in DOS, and type Date. If the date says 1/1/2000 your PC WILL work as long as you set the date correctly when you boot up on January 1st 2000. Type date and type in the correct date and Restart your PC and proceed to windows! with the knowledge your PC will be fine when you boot up in the next Millennium!
7. If your still reading this then the news is bad. Make sure you have completed the steps above correctly. If you have then Contact your PC's Manufacturer to see if there is a BIOS upgrade available. If not then the best solution is to get a new Motherboard which will include a new BIOS set. This will take an experienced engineer a couple of hours to fit and could prove costly so maybe it would be better to buy a new PC instead as in effect, you would be changing your computers Nervous system, everything plugs into it!

I do hope this has been of use to you. I Sincerely hope your PC is millennium friendly as it would be a great shame if you booted up on January 1st 2000 and your PC went AWOL.

Hopefully if enough people check their systems for compliance then the problem will not be too bad.

Ok, Ok, Lets stop this serious stuff for a minute, Click HERE For something funny about the bug!

If You Need help with carrying out this test and I will be glad to help!
